The ceremony held on Sunday 21 June drew many from Sydney's large Assyrian community and several Australian politicians, most notably the prime minister, who emphasized that Assyrians are an important part of Australia’s multicultural story.
Albanese noted that the Australian government is proud to have supported and helped complete the project, stating that the new hall will provide a place to celebrate Assyrian heritage and faith for generations to come. During his speech, Albanese said: “We are proud of the Assyrians; they are part of our country’s story.”
As in Sweden, which has its own sizable and well-integrated Assyrian community, Assyrians in Australia have become a visible and well-known group. Assyrian activists have recently joined forces with Greek and Armenian groups to call for a recognition of the 1915 genocide.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is a member and leader of the Australian Labor Party (often called "Labor"), Australia's main centre-left political party. The most recent Australian federal election was held on 3 May 2025, and Labor was re-elected with an increased majority. Australia's next federal election is expected in 2028.
The Prime Minister concluded his remarks with the Assyrian phrase “Basimah Raba” (“Thank you”), which was warmly welcomed by those in attendance.
