The initiative, carried out in coordination with the Zela Humanitarian Organization and the Duhok Governorate, seeks to revive the mountain’s natural landscape while reinforcing its environmental and symbolic importance to the people of Alqosh, local news outlets report.
Financial backing for the project is said to come from Nashwan Jamil Tomka, a native of Alqosh now residing in California, United States, who donated $20,000 to cover the cost of seeds and necessary materials.
According to local officials, seeds will be dispersed across the mountain’s face using helicopters provided by the Duhok Governorate. The operation will be conducted under the supervision of specialists to ensure optimal germination rates and long-term sustainability.
The Directorate has called on residents to actively participate in the campaign by helping prepare seed balls at the Alqosh Youth Forum. Community members are encouraged to contribute according to their ability and availability. The campaign has already begun and will continue for approximately two weeks.
Officials emphasized that the initiative is more than a tree-planting effort. It represents a broader environmental strategy to stabilize soil, combat desertification, improve vegetation cover, and restore a natural life cycle on the mountain. The project is also expected to enhance the town’s landscape and contribute to a healthier local climate.
Describing the campaign as an investment in Alqosh’s future, organizers concluded with the slogan: “Together we plant today… to harvest tomorrow a green mountain worthy of Alqosh and its people.”
The announcement was shared via the official page of the Director of the Alqosh Subdistrict.
