Authorities in the small German town of Leimen, south of Heidelberg, are investigating the case as suspected aggravated arson. According to police findings, there is no evidence that the attack was motivated by religion or politics.
The fire, which caused concern among members of the local Assyrian community and residents of Leimen, prompted fears that the church may have been targeted because of its religious identity. However, investigators have since ruled out both religious and political motives.
Local officials welcomed the swift progress in the investigation. The Assyrian community is a longstanding and active part of civic life in Leimen, and the new church building represents an important project for the congregation. Authorities also credited firefighters and alert neighbors whose quick response helped prevent more extensive damage.

Leimen Mayor John Ehret thanked the Mannheim Police Presidium for its rapid work, saying it was important for the community to have certainty that the incident was not motivated by hostility toward the church or its members. He emphasized the city’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and the safety of all residents.
The criminal investigation into the exact circumstances of the fire remains ongoing.
