He is the face of a new generation of athletes who find their identity not only on the pitch but in the deep history of their ancestors.

Between two worlds: An Assyrian star’s journey to the world stage

Kevin Enkido Yakob, the talented midfielder for Danish side Aarhus GF, recently spoke with Assyria TV about his remarkable journey from Sweden to the Iraqi national team, and how his career serves as a bridge of loyalty to his ancestral homeland.

Watching Kevin Yakob play today, one sees a strategically gifted midfielder with an eye for goal. However, Kevin’s story begins in the youth ranks of Assyriska BK in Sweden, a club founded by the Assyrian diaspora to keep their culture alive through sport. This foundation propelled him through Swedish giants BK Häcken and IFK Göteborg, but his heart eventually pulled him back toward the Tigris and Euphrates.

During his interview, the 25-year-old touched upon a sentiment shared by many in the diaspora: the enduring loyalty of the Assyrian people to the their homeland. Despite the challenges and the distance, Assyrians have historically been a cornerstone of Iraqi society, contributing to its culture, arts, and sports since the British carved out the country in the 1930s.

"It is a part of who I am," Yakob emphasizes. By choosing to represent the "Lions of Mesopotamia," he honors the resilience of his parents, who hail from Basra. His decision underscores a powerful message: the Assyrian community remains deeply rooted in the Mesopotamian soil, viewing the success of the national team as a shared triumph for all Iraqis, regardless of their background.

For years, Kevin was a rising star in the Swedish system, representing their U19 national team with distinction. However, in 2022, he made the definitive switch to Iraq. While the move surprised European scouts, it was celebrated by millions in the Middle East. "I want to represent my people and my roots on the world stage," the midfielder stated. This bridge between his European upbringing and his Middle Eastern heritage has made him a symbol of unity. Since his debut in early 2023, he has fought through a severe ACL injury with a determination fueled by the desire to bring pride to the people of Iraq.

Now performing at a high level with Aarhus GF (AGF) in the Danish Superliga, Kevin is focused on the ultimate prize: the FIFA World Cup. His presence in the Iraqi squad provides a tactical edge, but his presence in the hearts of the fans provides something more – hope.
