Assyrian-Australian boxer Alex Naman captures new title
Assyrian-Australian boxer Alex Naman extended his perfect record to 9–0, defeating his opponent to win the IBO Oceania-Orient Super Bantamweight title, another milestone in the rising fighter’s journey from refugee roots to undefeated pro.
Assyrian-Australian boxer Alex Naman has extended his undefeated professional record, improving to 9–0, after defeating Filipino fighter Kevin Aseniero to claim the IBO Oceania-Orient Super Bantamweight title, in a main-event bout at La Castelle Venue in Sydney, Australia.
Naman, who already held the WBC Australasian Silver title from his previous fight, earned his latest belt in a hard-fought performance, demonstrating his skill and resilience under pressure.
Born in Athens, Greece, Naman's family fled Iraqi Assyria amid conflict and emigrated to Western Sydney when Alex was just two years old. At the age of ten, he lost his father - a loss he says forced him to grow up quickly and shoulder responsibility for his younger sibling.
His entry into boxing came via cousin and fellow professional boxer, John Kaena, who signed him up to train at Western Sydney Fight Club under Assyrian coach Jason Soro. What started as an outlet for teenage energy soon became his professional calling. “It gave my life purpose and meaning,” Naman has told The Northern Daily. Since turning pro in 2024 after a 16-bout amateur career (including several title fights), he has remained unbeaten.
