The meeting, which took place in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding on June 23, included prominent spiritual and community leaders from Turkey's southeastern and metropolitan Assyrian communities. The delegation was led by Aphrem II, head of the Syriac Orthodox Church.

Following the reception, the Assyrian delegation expressed their deep satisfaction with the meeting, issuing a statement that praised President Erdoğan’s warm hospitality and sincere approach: "This meeting, held within the framework of mutual respect, understanding, and our shared values, will hold a precious place in our memories," the delegation stated, emphasizing the historic weight of the encounter.

Political analysts and community observers view the reception as a crucial step forward in reinforcing the ongoing dialogue between the Turkish state and its ancient and indiginous Assyrian community. The Syriac Orthodox Church, which has deep historical roots in modern-day Turkey, particularly in the southeastern province of Mardin (Tur Abdin), represents one of the oldest Assyrian Christian communities in the region.

The constructive tone of the meeting underscores a continued effort by Ankara to maintain active channels of communication with minority religious institutions, promoting social cohesion and mutual cultural recognition.

Notably, this meeting, as well as Patriarch Aphrem's earlier visit to Tur Abdin were impossible as long as the Assad regime was in power. With the fall of the Assad regime and the installment of the new pro-Turkish Syrian government, the head of the church, who resides in Damascus, is able to freely interact with Turkish actors.
