Assyrian parties in Syria call for restraint, dialogue

As tensions persist in Syria’s Gozarto region, leading Assyrian political organizations have warned against further escalation, urging dialogue and the protection of civilian areas amid fighting between Kurdish PYD forces and the Syrian government.

Assyrian parties in Syria call for restraint, dialogue

The Assyrian Democratic Organization, ADO and the Assyrian Democratic Party, ADP have both issued statements calling for restraint and dialogue to resolve the ongoing conflict between the Kurdish PYD party, which occupies segments of Gozarto, and the Syrian government.

"Hasakah governorate, especially the Khabur region and the town of Tel Tamer, represents a historical, humanitarian, and existential depth for our Assyrian people. These areas have suffered in recent years from the scourge of terrorism, violence, and displacement, and the effects of those tragedies remain present in the collective memory of the region’s inhabitants. Any new military escalation would risk reproducing catastrophe and threaten what remains of the authentic Assyrian presence on this land.", the ADP has stated.

The ADP added: "In this context, the Assyrian Democratic Party affirms its categorical rejection of turning areas of civilian, particularly Assyrian villages along the banks of the Khabur River, into arenas of conflict or sites for military or regional score-settling. Peaceful civilians must remain outside the circle of conflict, and their protection is a national and moral responsibility that falls upon all parties."

Meanwhile, the Assyrian Democratic Organization said it: "Directs a sincere national appeal to the President of the Republic, Ahmad al-Sharaa, to continue and deepen dialogue with all components of the Jazira region, and to work seriously to find peaceful solutions and political understandings that lead to a permanent halt to military operations and address the causes of the conflict through national dialogue, reaching a comprehensive political solution that ends the state of exclusion and political deadlock."

There are no reports of Assyrian casualties since the beginning of the armed Kurdish uprising.
