The recognition was announced in a statement released by the Treasurer’s office on Friday 23 February, marking Assyrian National Heritage Month and acknowledging the historical depth and modern achievements of the Assyrian community.
According to the statement, the honorees represent a broad cross-section of Assyrian civic life, including entrepreneurs, professionals, educators, and community advocates who have played a key role in strengthening both the Assyrian community and the wider social and economic fabric of Cook County.
Treasurer Pappas praised the Assyrian community for its resilience, cultural preservation, and commitment to public service, noting that Assyrians have contributed significantly to local business development, charitable initiatives, and civic engagement while maintaining a strong attachment to their heritage.
Assyrian community leaders welcomed the recognition as an important gesture of visibility and inclusion, stressing that public acknowledgment by elected officials helps affirm the Assyrian presence and identity within American civic life.

Cook County is home to one of the largest Assyrian populations in the United States, with communities concentrated in the Chicago metropolitan area. Local Assyrian organizations have been active in promoting cultural awareness, humanitarian relief, and advocacy for the rights of Assyrians in the Assyrian homeland.
The recognition by the Cook County Treasurer adds to a growing number of acknowledgments by U.S. state and local authorities recognizing Assyrian heritage, history, and contributions.
