Assyrian Catholic bishop under investigation for embezzlement and brothel visits
A Vatican-ordered investigation has been launched into Assyrian bishop Emanuel Shaleta of the Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Saint Peter the Apostle of San Diego, following allegations of financial misconduct and inappropriate behavior, according to reporting by Catholic news sites.
According to reporting by The Pillar, a Catholic news site, Assyrian bishop Emanuel Shaleta, head of the Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Saint Peter the Apostle of San Diego, has submitted his resignation amid a Vatican-ordered investigation into serious allegations of financial impropriety and personal misconduct.
The inquiry began after parish finance officials at St. Peter’s Chaldean Cathedral in El Cajon, California, identified irregular banking activity dating back to late 2024. Documents reviewed by The Pillar suggest that hundreds of thousands of dollars in rent and other parish funds were diverted through internal accounts meant for charitable aid, with at least $427,000 documented and potential irregularities approaching $1 million.
In addition to the financial concerns, the investigation’s dossier includes claims of improper conduct, including multiple late-night trips across the U.S.–Mexico border to an establishment in Tijuana described in local media as a brothel. A private investigator cited by The Pillar reported surveillance of the bishop’s movements in connection with this activity.
The Vatican’s Dicastery for Eastern Churches delegated the canonical inquiry to the Archbishop of Los Angeles, and a civil investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is also underway. To date, Shaleta’s resignation has notbeen formally accepted by the Vatican, and Chaldean Patriarch Cardinal Louis Sako is reported to be advocating for him to remain in leadership or serve in another capacity, according to sources cited by The Pillar.
