The project is intended to address a longstanding infrastructure problem that has affected Mzizah and surrounding communities, where residents have for years faced inadequate sanitation services and wastewater flowing through open channels which also spread a foul odor in the area.

According Mzizah News, a community page on Facebook, the project is expected to cost approximately 160 million Turkish liras (€2.90 million or US$3.27 million) and is scheduled for completion in April 2027\. The planned network will include large-diameter sewage pipes extending approximately nine kilometers, connecting the area along the route from Midyat through Mzizah toward the Monastery of Mor Gabriel.

The project follows several years of efforts by an Assyrian community committee established approximately three years ago to press for improved infrastructure across Tur Abdin.

Ilhan Aydin, a 32-year-old Assyrian lawyer based in Stockholm, told Mzizah News that the committee had held meetings with Turkish government officials in both Sweden and Ankara. The group presented more than 22 demands concerning the needs of residents across Tur Abdin, with the sewage network among its priorities.

According to Aydin, the committee's meetings with Turkish officials helped bring the sewage issue onto the government's agenda. The group also followed the administrative and legal procedures required to move the project forward.

The initiative comes amid broader calls from Assyrian communities in Tur Abdin and the diaspora for greater investment in infrastructure and public services in the region's historic Assyrian villages.

The lack of a proper sewage system has resulted in wastewater being discharged through open channels, creating persistent odors and concerns over the contamination of agricultural land and water resources. The new network is expected to provide a permanent sanitation system and improve living conditions for residents of Mzizah and neighboring areas.

In a related development, the Assyrian village of Sederi, in the southern part of Tur Abdin, announced that a major road project connecting it with other villages and areas has began. "For us, it's much more than just a road: it's the future, connection, and quality of life – for our village, the coming generations, Tur Abdin, and everyone who visits us!", the community wrote in a post on Facebook announcing the commencement of the project.

The new road will make it easy for anyone to reach the village from the high way which runs along the Turkish-Syrian border, without major detours through mountainous terrain, improving access and quality of life for the residents.

Sederi is one of seven purely Assyrian villages in the mountainous part of the Tur Abdin region known as Tur Izlo. The village has experienced considerable revival with many families returning to rebuild their family homes.
